“The Office of Sustainable Societies” Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde  

“The Office of Sustainable Society” is a project that illuminates, experimentally explores, and concretely activates sustainable urban development.”The Office of Sustainable Societies” is a mobile office which localizes in different areas and spaces in the Öresund region, inititated by two artist groups in the Öresund- region, PUBLIC GLOBALITY GARDENS (S) and OUTER NØRREBRO KULTUR BUREAU (DK) as a a strategy to work for sustainability in the region. Individually the groups are working with different local projects. PUBLIC GLOBALITY GARDENS which established “The Allotment at S:t Knuts square” in Malmö to start a constructive debate about the negative effects of the increasing exploition of green areas in this city. YNKB, which participated in the initiative group´s proposal to create an acitivity park on DSB property at Nørrebro station and another proposal for an arts and culture centre at the Freighthalls in the Nørrebro quarter of Copenhagen.

The aim of the cooperation is to raise local urban planning issues to a relevant level in both Denmark and Sweden. Through documentation and installations, “The Office of Sustainable Societies” wishes to inspire local actions and develop a plan of action that can be used to renew and change urban planning on the global level. “The Office of Sustainable Societies” is an active base where examples of its work, and that of others, are made accessible through a library, archives, videos, slides, tapes, a virtual web-site etc. The public is welcome to study the archive when the office is exhibiting in different ways.

All are welcome to apply for a gratis piece of land in the courtyard of Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde. The courtyard will be divided into lots and distributed free of charge. Applications and distribution takes place at the The Office of Sustainable Societies or by contacting us. The lots can be utilized from 19 January to 21 March 2004 as a means of demonstrating citizens´ direct participation in the administration and utilization of urban land.

The project is part of The Digital Bauhaus (Malmö – Roskilde), 23 January to 21 March 2004, Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde The Digital Bauhaus (Malmö-Roskilde) is a joint exhibition project in the Øresund Region that focuses attention for the first time on Malmö University’s special department (K3) for Art, Culture and Communication.
